How To Save Money As A Couple: Super Easy

How To Save Money As A Couple: Super Easy

There are many ways to save money as a couple. If you would like to know some nifty tricks, then read on!

1. Rent a one-bedroom apartment

When you’re a young working single individual, you may have no choice but to rent a place and it can get quite costly especially if you don’t want to share a room or common space with someone else.

As a couple, you can get a studio apartment or a one-bedroom apartment and split the cost of the rent.

You can both share the bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, living room area, etc and it’d be fine because you’re a couple. It’s not like you have to share a kitchen with a stranger you have to learn to tolerate. You chose each other so that should be a lot easier.

2. Share a room and rent the other rooms in the house out

If you both own a house, you can share a room and rent the rest of the house out.

This will create extra income for you as a couple. You can use the money to invest or save up for a trip together.

3. Agree on monthly spending budget

It may be a good idea to share a joint account where you’d both share the finances and can see the money going in and out of the account.

You’d then agree on a monthly spending budget. Don’t go overboard. Both of you should be responsible for not spending more than your share of the budget.

If you have money left over after spending it on the necessities, you can always spend it on things that you want.

4. Review daily spending with your partner

At the end of the day (or week), you can review spending with your partner to make sure there isn’t anything alarming to explain to each other.

Keeping everything in the open can prevent fights. If you feel like you have to hide any spending, you may have to consider whether this is the right relationship for you.

(Unless the spending it’s for a surprise birthday party)

5. Take a vacation closer to home

Vacation can easily be one of the biggest spendings of the year. You can try to save on your vacation budget by taking a vacation closer to home. Perhaps you don’t even have to leave the country.

Taking a vacation closer to home can allow you to save quite a bit of money.

6. Cook for each other

Cooking for each other can be romantic and it also saves you money. Not to mention how it may also make you both healthier.

You can also learn how to cook together. Something worth giving a try if none of you are great cooks is HelloFresh. They deliver fresh ingredients to your door in carefully measured portions so nothing will go to waste. They often have sales so it’s worth it to check it out. It’s also cheaper than ordering take-out.

Cooking for each other can also help strengthen the bond between couples. It’s one of the best ways to save money as a couple.

7. Stay at home for date night

For some couples, weekly date night can’t be missed and if you choose to go to expensive restaurants every time, it’ll quickly eat away your hard earn cash so it’s best to stay at home for date night if you want to save money.

Date night at home can still be romantic if you set the mood right: dim the lights, light some candles, play some romantic music, slow dance together, cook for each other, drink some wine, etc.

8. Practice minimalism

Minimalism is the idea of not having a lot of things. It basically is the opposite of materialism. Instead of buying a lot of things you don’t need, you can minimize your life and opt to not buy unless it’s absolutely necessary.

That ducky clock? You don’t need it. You already have a clock at home.

So when your wife comes home with another set of “work clothes” or when your husband comes home with another golf ball set, you know you should remind them about your newfound minimalism lifestyle.

9. Don’t get a pet

Many couples have a pet. Don’t get a pet if you want to save more money. Having a pet can be expensive especially if they get sick.

You also have to make sure to feed it, wash it, walk it, etc all of which could take time away from each other and other hobbies you may have.

Personally, I love animals and I can’t live without my cats but this is just a reminder that you can decide not to get a pet to save money.

10. Tell each other where everything is stored

How many times have you gone out to buy something that’s already at home because you don’t know where it’s stored? I bet many times.

It’s good to organize your home but make sure your partner knows where everything is stored so you can save some trips to the store.

11. Make a grocery list to avoid double shopping

I’ve heard many stories about couples buying a lot of bananas because it was on sale and because both of them didn’t tell each other that they were buying bananas.

Make a grocery list if you want to avoid double shopping. This can of course saves you money.

12. Get a free babysitter

For couples who have kids, having to get a babysitter can quickly rack up a lot of bills so you should try to get a free babysitter if you can.

You can talk to your friends and family. You can also set up a deal where you’d babysit their kids for free one weekend and they get to babysit your kids for free another weekend.

13. Specialize in your crafts

Typically, the husband is better at fixing cars and the wife is better at patching up holes in clothes.

You can always specialize as a couple so you both have valuable skills that can save you money should it comes to that.

Say you need to change the oil on your car, instead of taking it to the mechanic, you can ask your husband to do it for you because he’s learned how to change oil himself.

It makes sense for each person to specialize so you can end up with a wide array of different skill sets that each would be helpful in different scenarios.
